A handful of late 80s Bordeaux wines arrived at the cellar today. Also a few more recent ones, such as the 2015 Château d’Aiguilhe, which supposedly is a wonderful “value” Bordeaux, and the 2016 Closerie Saint Roc. Finally, Dominique Lafon makes an appearance with his Bourgogne Aligoté.
I will taste most of these at some point during the year, hopefully in the company of good friends and family, so stay tuned.
EN: A cuvée of about three quarters Cabernet Sauvignon and one quarter Merlot. From a rather unappreciated Bordeaux vintage 2013 with somewhat lighter wines, not all of which will have a long life.
The colour of this wine is youthful. An opaque deep dark red with purple highlights. In the glass it draws thick streaks.
An elegant bouquet with a very light floral touch and a distinct but soft cherry fruit. Reminiscent of cherry yogurt. I like it! A vanilla spice is there, but also subtle. With a hint of mint in the background. Smoke was initially present after opening, but this quickly dissipated, allowing the fruit to predominate.
The tannins are velvety. The mouthfeel is really soft and approachable. The acidity is restrained. On the palate, the dark fruit again predominates. With more time in the glass, this does not change much.
Although the wine seems rather soft, the finish is long and dry.
Overall, the 2013 is an approachable Château d’Issan. The wine is elegant, but has only few edges at this stage, which some may miss. Nevertheless, I liked it very much: Sometimes a red wine is a lot of fun even if it is not the most complex. It’ll be interesting to see whether more cellaring can bring out some tertiary notes into the mix. DM91.
DE: Eine Cuvée aus etwa drei Vierteln Cabernet Sauvignon und einem Viertel Merlot. Aus einem eher unbeachteten Bordeaux-Jahrgang 2013 mit etwas leichteren Weinen, von denen nicht alle ein langes Leben haben werden.
Die Farbe dieses Weins ist jugendlich. Ein undurchsichtiges, tiefes Dunkelrot mit violetten Reflexen. Im Glas zieht er dicke Schlieren.
Ein elegantes Bouquet mit einer sehr leichten blumigen Note und einer deutlichen, aber weichen Kirschfrucht. Erinnert an Kirschjoghurt. Das gefällt mir! Ein Vanillegewürz ist vorhanden, aber auch subtil. Mit einem Hauch von Minze im Hintergrund. Nach dem Öffnen war zunächst Rauch zu spüren, der sich aber schnell verflüchtigte und die Frucht in den Vordergrund treten ließ.
Die Tannine sind samtig. Das Mundgefühl ist sehr weich und zugänglich. Der Säuregehalt ist zurückhaltend. Am Gaumen überwiegen wieder die dunklen Früchte. Mit mehr Zeit im Glas ändert sich daran nicht viel.
Obwohl der Wein eher weich erscheint, ist der Abgang lang und trocken.
Insgesamt ist der 2013er ein zugänglicher Château d’Issan. Der Wein ist elegant, hat aber in diesem Stadium nur wenige Ecken und Kanten, die manche vielleicht vermissen. Dennoch hat er mir sehr gut gefallen: Manchmal macht ein Rotwein viel Spaß, auch wenn er nicht der komplexeste ist. Es wird interessant sein, zu sehen, ob eine weitere Lagerung im Keller einige tertiäre Noten in die Mischung bringen kann. DM91.
EN: A Bordeaux AOC from Girard in the south-east of Bordeaux. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from old vines, so says the label, aged for 18 months in oak barrels. Dark red colour with purple reflections. No sign of age here. A hint of freshness on the nose, plus dark berry fruits. Spicy notes suggest the wood ageing. The mouthfeel is very dry. The tannins are tight. Rough leather, blackcurrant with a medium acidity, plus vanilla and also some pepper. The wine is rather austere in the fruit. The earthy minerality calls for hearty dishes. The wine went well with lamb with rosemary. In general, it excelled more as a food companion than as a soloist. I don’t think there is much storage potential here. I would finish it sooner rather than later. DM83.
DE: Ein Bordeaux AOC aus Girard im Südosten von Bordeaux. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon von alten Reben, so steht es auf dem Etikett, 18 Monate in Eichenfässern gereift. Dunkelrote Farbe mit violetten Reflexen. Keine Anzeichen von Alter. In der Nase ein Hauch von Frische, dazu dunkle Beerenfrüchte. Würzige Noten deuten auf die Reifung im Holz hin. Das Mundgefühl ist sehr trocken. Die Tannine sind straff. Raues Leder, schwarze Johannisbeere mit mittlerer Säure, dazu Vanille und auch etwas Pfeffer. Der Wein ist eher streng in der Frucht. Die erdige Mineralität verlangt nach deftigen Gerichten. Der Wein passte gut zu Lammfleisch mit Rosmarin. Im Allgemeinen hat er sich mehr als Essensbegleiter denn als Solist hervorgetan. Ich glaube nicht, dass er ein großes Lagerungspotenzial hat. Ich würde ihn eher früher als später austrinken. DM83.
EN: A pure Merlot from Château Garraud in Lalande-de-Pomerol (Marquis de G is a Bordeaux AOC). Transparent, light purple colour with discreet brick-red tones at the rim. Visually, the wine does not yet show its age. On the nose, great, inviting fruity aromas of plum and blackberries. Behind this are spicy and earthy secondary aromas reminiscent of beetroot. Very good so far! In the mouth, a dry mouthfeel, but rather slightly astringent. Overall rather light with a good acidity so that the fruit does not come across too lush. This Merlot from a relatively – at least to me – unknown winemaker surprised me positively. The velvety, light tannins do not suggest a much longer ageing potential, but that doesn’t matter at all, because the wine is virtually singing at the moment. And at this price, it’s all the more fun. Drink now and within the next two years. DM88.
DE: Ein reiner Merlot von Château Garraud in Lalande-de-Pomerol (Marquis de G ist ein Bordeaux AOC). Transparente, hellviolette Farbe mit dezenten ziegelroten Tönen am Rand. Man sieht dem Wein sein Alter noch nicht an. In der Nase große, einladende Fruchtaromen von Pflaumen und Brombeeren. Dahinter verbergen sich würzige und erdige Sekundäraromen, die an rote Beete erinnern. Sehr gut bis jetzt! Im Mund ein trockenes Mundgefühl, aber eher leicht adstringierend. Insgesamt eher leicht mit einer guten Säure, so dass die Frucht nicht zu üppig daherkommt. Dieser Merlot von einem – zumindest für mich – relativ unbekannten Winzer hat mich positiv überrascht. Die samtigen, leichten Tannine lassen nicht auf ein viel längeres Alterungspotential schließen, aber das macht nichts, denn der Wein singt im Moment geradezu. Und zu diesem Preis macht er umso mehr Spaß. Trinken Sie ihn jetzt und innerhalb der nächsten zwei Jahre. DM88.

EN: A cuvée of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Clear appearance. Deep, golden yellow colour. On the nose matured notes of dried oranges, crème brûlée with caramelized sugar, malty, elderberry. But also a slight freshness with physalis. A medium body. On the palate, an impression of oloroso sherry, again physalis and an acidity that does not last too long, but comes across as surprisingly fresh. Passion fruit. A slight bitterness at the end. I was really pleasantly surprised by this storable white wine, which is not only drinkable but very tasty with food. Still, it has undoubtedly passed the optimal drinking window. So, if there are still bottles in the cellar, drink up now. DM91-.
DE: Eine Cuvée aus Sauvignon Blanc und Sémillon. Klares Aussehen. Tiefe, goldgelbe Farbe. In der Nase reife Noten von getrockneten Orangen, Crème brûlée mit karamellisiertem Zucker, Malz, Holunder. Aber auch eine leichte Frische mit Physalis. Ein mittlerer Körper. Am Gaumen ein Eindruck von Oloroso-Sherry, wieder Physalis und eine Säure, die nicht zu lange anhält, aber überraschend frisch wirkt. Maracuja. Eine leichte Bitterkeit im Abgang. Ich war wirklich angenehm überrascht von diesem lagerfähigen Weißwein, der nicht nur trinkbar ist, sondern auch sehr gut zum Essen passt. Dennoch hat er das optimale Trinkfenster zweifellos überschritten. Wenn Sie also noch Flaschen im Keller haben, trinken Sie sie jetzt. DM91-.
EN: Decanted for two hours. Deep red color that still shows little sign of aging. On the nose, red fruits and dark berries paired with very subtle tobacco notes. This impression continues on the palate: red cherries and currants are prominent. In addition, a lively acidity. Haptically, the wine is characterized by a medium body with soft tannins. All in all, not an overly complex, but very pleasant Bordeaux that is a pleasure to have in the glass and goes well with braised dishes, for example. Drink now until 2025. DM89.
DE: Zwei Stunden lang dekantiert. Tiefrote Farbe, die noch wenig Anzeichen von Alterung zeigt. In der Nase rote Früchte und dunkle Beeren, gepaart mit sehr subtilen Tabaknoten. Dieser Eindruck setzt sich am Gaumen fort: rote Kirschen und Johannisbeeren stehen im Vordergrund. Dazu eine lebendige Säure. Haptisch zeichnet sich der Wein durch einen mittleren Körper mit weichen Tanninen aus. Alles in allem ein nicht übermäßig komplexer, aber sehr angenehmer Bordeaux, der im Glas viel Freude bereitet und z.B. gut zu Schmorgerichten passt. Jetzt trinken bis 2025. DM89.
It’s been another nice advent evening with the family, homemade French food, and good wines! We started off with the Marie Ambal Rosé Crémant de Bourgogne by Veuve Ambal. Fine acidity and sweet strawberries. It was easy-going as an aperitif and paired well with a hot onion soup.
The main course was boeuf bourguignon, served with a red bordeaux, the 2015 Château Brun. This château from Saint Émilion may be relatively unknown, but it has been in family ownership since 1571. Today, it works with the oenologist Gilles Paquet, whose former clients include Château Ausone and Château Cheval Blanc.
EN: A cuvée from Domaines Alain Aubert made from 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Purple colour. In the nose, spicy wood notes and a little bit of liquorice, but also soft aromas of elderberry and vanilla. On the fruity side, I get strawberries and dark berries. The mouthfeel is dry and conveys a medium body. The tannins are already well integrated. A pleasant acidity gives the wine freshness without disturbing. Although not low at 14%, the alcohol content is not intrusive. The taste reveals a mix of beetroot and blackberry. The finish is of medium length. This is a pleasant red wine to enjoy without much fuss. Drink between now and 2024. DM87.
DE: Eine Cuvée der Domaines Alain Aubert aus 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc und 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Violette Farbe. In der Nase würzige Holznoten und ein wenig Lakritze, aber auch weiche Aromen von Holunder und Vanille. Auf der fruchtigen Seite entdecke ich Erdbeeren und dunkle Beeren. Das Mundgefühl ist trocken und vermittelt einen mittleren Körper. Die Tannine sind bereits gut integriert. Eine angenehme Säure verleiht dem Wein Frische, ohne zu stören. Obwohl der Alkoholgehalt mit 14% nicht niedrig ist, ist er nicht aufdringlich. Der Geschmack zeigt eine Mischung aus Roter Bete und Brombeere. Der Abgang ist von mittlerer Länge. Ein angenehmer Rotwein, den man ohne viel Aufhebens genießen kann. Zu trinken zwischen jetzt und 2024. DM87.
