Wines that have a DM84, DM85 or DM86 rating are average on a fine wine level. That means the wines have been produced well, they have no apparent flaws or big imbalances that would put me off. On the other hand, they lack features that make them stand out in a positive way, such as a complex flavour profile or a very elegant tannin structure. Put differently, if offered a glass, I will gladly drink it. I might even have another one. Would I buy a bottle from this category for my own cellar? I might, yes. For example, wines with a DM84 to DM86 rating are usually not too demanding, so they can be a good fit for guests who are beginners to fine wine or very casual drinkers.
Clear appearance. Pale to medium ruby red colour. The bouquet is clean and of medium intensity: There are dark cherries, blackberries, dark plums leaning towards the cooked side, and cassis. A vanilla scent indicates this wine was oaked. In the mouth, this Australien Shiraz cuvée has a medium to full body. It is bone dry. The high acidity could have been integrated better. It stands out a little, at least to my taste. Strong tannins and high alcohol. The flavour intensity is medium — you find most of the dark fruits, especially the cherries — but the finish is short. Solid everyday wine that is good with hearty dishes. The wine has improved from a year ago when I last tried it, but it isn’t made for the long run. Drink through 2025. DM85.
In eager anticipation of our upcoming Burgundy trip, I couldn’t wait and decided to “warm up” by opening a bottle of Chardonnay from my cellar. I picked a rather down-to-earth representation, the 2020 Bourgogne Blanc by Maison Louis Latour, one of the bigger players in the region.
The vintage 2020 closed out the 2018-20 trio of hot years in Europe. However, unlike 2019, temperatures didn’t go extreme for the most part. There were some cool nights and there was enough rainfall to produce healthy and juicy grapes by picking season. I’m not so sure the grapes for this wine were picked at the right time though. While the official vintage report by Louis Latour states they started harvesting on 19 August already, I still get plenty of ripe aromas, slightly on the flabby side.
EN:Der kleine Fritz (“Little Fritz”), that’s what the Friedrich Becker winery from the Palatinate on the border to Alsace calls its Pinot Noir, which it produces exclusively for the discounter Lidl in Germany. A red wine from the supermarket, even from a discounter? Is that possible? After listening to a recent interview with Friedrich Becker, I became interested and thought, why don’t I try the little Fritz? After all, Friedrich Becker is one of the Pinot specialists in Germany and as far as sales at discounters are concerned, the winery is in good company, for example Markus Molitor and Van Volxem also make wines for Lidl. (I’ll be tasting these soon, of course).
The colour is a transparent violet. Thick streaks in the glass. Fresh and cool on the nose. Plenty of wild berries. All in all a nice fresh fruity scent! In the mouth a rather thin body with slender tannins. The wine is probably matured in stainless steel tanks, which is of course also supported by the production volume. Very accessible, slightly astringent. Fresh on the palate with an acidic red fruit, slightly bitter. The taste is pleasant, but not long lasting. Der kleine Fritz is a rock-solid Pinot Noir and a surprisingly good wine for a purchase from a discounter. I plan to try it blind in the future against somewhat higher-priced red wines from the wine trade. DM85.
DE:Der kleine Fritz, so nennt das Weingut Friedrich Becker aus der Pfalz an der Grenze zum Elsass seinen Spätburgunder, den es exklusiv für den Discounter Lidl in Deutschland produziert. Ein Rotwein aus dem Supermarkt, gar aus einem Discounter? Geht das? Nachdem ich kürzlich ein Interview mit Friedrich Becker gehört habe, wurde ich interessiert und dachte mir, wieso probiere ich den kleinen Fritz nicht einmal? Schließlich gehört Friedrich Becker zu den Pinot-Spezialisten in Deutschland und was den Verkauf bei Discountern angeht, befindet sich das Unternehmen in guter Gesellschaft, machen doch zum Beispiel auch Markus Molitor und Van Volxem Weine für Lidl. (Diese werde ich freilich auch bald verkosten.)
Die Farbe ein transparentes Violett. Dicke Schlieren im Glas. In der Nase frisch und im ersten Eindruck kühl. Reichlich Waldbeeren. Insgesamt ein schöner frisch-fruchtiger Duft! Im Mund ein eher dünner Körper mit schlanken Tanninen. Der Ausbau erfolgt wahrscheinlich im Edelstahltank, dafür spricht natürlich auch die Produktionsmenge. Sehr zugänglich, leicht adstringierend. Am Gaumen frisch mit einer sauren roten Frucht, leicht bitter. Der Geschmack ist angenehm, aber nicht lang anhaltend. Der kleine Fritz ist ein grundsolider Spätburgunder und für einen Kauf beim Discounter ein überraschend guter Wein. Ich nehme mir vor, ihn in Zukunft einmal blind gegen etwas höherpreisige Rotweine aus dem Fachhandel zu probieren. DM85.
EN: A cuvée of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. From the Navarra region, which borders directly on Rioja and is located to the northeast.
The colour is a deep ruby red with a brick red rim. The nose is spicy and somewhat smoky, with dark berries, sweet vanilla and mint. Blackcurrants on the palate. In addition, an opulent sweetness, but also notes of iron and pepper. The tannins are well integrated and relatively soft in the 2016 at this point.
Overall, an accessible wine and food companion at a budget-friendly price. DM85.
DE: Eine Cuvée aus Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon und Merlot. Aus dem Gebiet Navarra, das direkt an das Rioja angrenzt und nordöstlich davon gelegen ist.
Die Farbe ist ein tiefes Rubinrot mit einem ziegelroten Rand. In der Nase würzig und etwas rauchig, mit dunklen Beeren, süßer Vanille und Pfefferminz. Am Gaumen schwarze Johannisbeeren. Dazu eine opulente Süße, aber auch Noten von Eisen und Pfeffer. Die Tannine sind gut eingebunden und beim 2016er zum heutigen Zeitpunkt relativ weich.
Insgesamt ein zugänglicher Wein und Speisenbegleiter zu einem günstigen Preis. DM85.
EN: Light colour and soft tannins. Lots of primary fruit with dark cherries in particular. Not heavy on the spices, but offers hints of white pepper. This is a good value wine from Piedmont that isn’t complex, but fun to drink and a nice accompaniment to tapas plates. Drink now. DM85.
DE: Helle Farbe und weiche Tannine. Viel Primärfrucht, vor allem dunkle Kirschen. Nicht sehr würzig, aber mit einem Hauch von weißem Pfeffer. Ein preiswerter Wein aus Piemont, der nicht komplex ist, aber Spaß macht und gut zu Tapas passt. Jetzt trinken. DM85.
EN: Fruit forward, particularly red cherries and blackberries. There are spicy notes, too. However, at 14.5 the alcohol doesn’t go unnoticed, making the overall presentation a little rough around the edges. Neither complex nor subtle. I doubt giving it more time in the cellar will do much to improve the flavour. Drink between now and 2024. DM85.
DE: Fruchtbetont, vor allem rote Kirschen und Brombeeren. Auch würzige Noten sind zu erkennen. Der Alkoholgehalt von 14,5 % bleibt jedoch nicht unbemerkt und macht die Gesamtpräsentation ein wenig rau. Weder komplex noch subtil. Ich bezweifle, dass eine längere Lagerung im Keller den Geschmack verbessern wird. Trinkbar zwischen jetzt und 2024. DM85.
EN: This is a bottling exclusively for Mövenpick; 12.0%, a cuvée of Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Müller-Thurgau (Rivaner). The nose is dominated by light fruits, apricot. Fresh acidity on the palate, only slightly astringent. Peach, green apple, a hint of lime. Very “drinkable” without edges and corners. Goes well with fish and light summer dishes. DM85
DE: Dies ist eine Abfüllung exklusiv für Mövenpick; 12,0%, eine Cuvée aus Riesling, Weißburgunder und Müller-Thurgau (Rivaner). Die Nase wird von hellen Früchten, Aprikose dominiert. Am Gaumen frische Säure, nur leicht adstringierend. Pfirsich, grüner Apfel, ein Hauch von Limette. Sehr “trinkbar” ohne Ecken und Kanten. Passt gut zu Fisch und leichten Sommergerichten. DM85
