My Ten Years On tasting notes are for wines that are ten years old. I count the years between the vintage on the bottle and the date of the dégustation. For example, a wine from grapes harvested in 2013 that I tasted during the year 2023 can be found in this section.
Ten Years On tastings are a good way of establishing how a particular wine has held up over the years. The insights from these tastings help form a better idea of a wine’s long-term potential with respect to its optimal drinking window. This is often especially insightful when comparing different wines from the same vintage. Plus, it’s just fun!
At Le Carmin, we spent another wonderful evening in Beaune yesterday. The maître d’hôtel was superb. Merci beaucoup, monsieur! Not to mention, they’re dog-friendly, too. From their extensive wine menu, I picked the 2013 Philippe Pacalet Meursault.
Philippe Pacalet is a négociant based in Beaune. He has been making wine since the early 2000s. Today, he processes grapes from around 20 hectares of vineyards. His style of winemaking is natural in that he relies on spontaneous fermentation and not too much new oak.
We brought this wine with us from Sylt. In fact, the wonderful people at Web Christel were so kind to sell this half bottle of 2013 Château Lagrange to us at a take-away price. Now back from our holidays, we thought it’s the perfect time to enjoy this “souvenir” with some canapés before settling back into everyday work life.
EN: A cuvée of three quarters Cabernet Sauvignon, one fifth Merlot and some Petit Verdot. Purple, still youthful colour. The bouquet is flattering, with soft and creamy notes of vanilla, wood spice, cherries, and some pencil and mint. I would most likely speak of “elegance” here. On the palate, this trait continues: a seductive cherry fruit with fresh acidity and dark chocolate. After Eight with Amarena cherries. The tertiary notes are not yet in the foreground, which is perhaps a good thing, because the fruit is not bombastically dominant and could otherwise get lost.
The 2013 wine year was, as we know, a difficult one in the Médoc. Nevertheless, I would not completely disregard these wines. They can certainly be drunk younger than the red wines from warmer and drier years. This is also the case with this Ch. Lagrange, whose optimal drinking window I estimate to be 2018 to 2028. So it’s right in there now! What the 2013 from Lagrange may lack in power, it makes up for with elegant understatement. DM92.
DE: Eine Cuvée aus drei Vierteln Cabernet Sauvignon, einem Fünftel Merlot und etwas Petit Verdot. Purpurne, noch jugendliche Farbe. Das Bouquet ist schmeichelnd, mit weichen und cremigen Noten von Vanille, Holzwürze, Kirschen, sowie etwas Bleistift und Minze. Am ehesten würde ich hier von “Eleganz” sprechen. Am Gaumen setzt sich dieser Charakterzug fort: Eine verführerische Kirschfrucht mit frischer Säure und Bitterschokolade. After Eight mit Amarenakirschen. Die tertiären Noten stehen noch nicht im Vordergrund, was vielleicht auch gut ist, denn die Frucht ist nicht bombastisch dominant und könnte sonst verloren gehen.
Das Weinjahr 2013 war bekanntlich ein schwieriges im Médoc. Dennoch würde ich diese Weine nicht komplett außer Acht lassen. Sie lassen sich bestimmt jünger trinken als die Rotweine aus wärmeren und trockeneren Jahren. So auch dieser Ch. Lagrange, dessen optimales Trinkfenster ich auf 2018 bis 2028 schätze. Jetzt also genau drin! Was dem 2013er aus dem Hause Lagrange an Power fehlen mag, macht er mit elegantem Understatement wett. DM92.
Following our recent trip to the Rheingau, I was obviously inspired to open a Rheingau Riesling for today’s dinner. Cheers!
EN: Village wine from Rüdesheim from August Kesseler, aged for ten years. (The winery itself is located in Assmanshausen, one of Germany’s Spätburgunder/Pinot Noir strongholds).
Golden colour. A wonderful bouquet on the nose. Initially marked by a stony minerality, eventually joined by floral and fruity notes of peach and oxidised apple. In the mouth, a smooth acidity. This turns into tangerines or a juicy, sweet orange on the palate. Above this lies a slight spiciness that lingers even longer and, together with the sweetness (more than the acidity), carries the finish. All in all, an animating wine with great drinking flow! DM88.
DE: Zehn Jahre gereifter Ortswein aus Rüdesheim vom Weingut August Kesseler. (Das Weingut selbst liegt in Assmanshausen, einer der Spätburgunder-Hochburgen Deutschlands.)
Goldene Farbe. In der Nase ein wunderbares Bukett. Zunächst geprägt von einer steinigen Mineralität, gesellen sich schließlich blumige und fruchtige Noten von Pfirsich und oxidiertem Apfel hinzu. Im Mund eine schmeichelnde Säure. Diese wird am Gaumen zu Mandarinen oder einer saftigen, süßen Orange. Über dem liegt eine leichte Würzigkeit, die noch länger anhält und gemeinsam mit der Süße (mehr als der Säure) den Abgang trägt. Alles in allem ein animierender Wein mit tollem Trinkfluss! DM88.
EN: A cuvée of about three quarters Cabernet Sauvignon and one quarter Merlot. From a rather unappreciated Bordeaux vintage 2013 with somewhat lighter wines, not all of which will have a long life.
The colour of this wine is youthful. An opaque deep dark red with purple highlights. In the glass it draws thick streaks.
An elegant bouquet with a very light floral touch and a distinct but soft cherry fruit. Reminiscent of cherry yogurt. I like it! A vanilla spice is there, but also subtle. With a hint of mint in the background. Smoke was initially present after opening, but this quickly dissipated, allowing the fruit to predominate.
The tannins are velvety. The mouthfeel is really soft and approachable. The acidity is restrained. On the palate, the dark fruit again predominates. With more time in the glass, this does not change much.
Although the wine seems rather soft, the finish is long and dry.
Overall, the 2013 is an approachable Château d’Issan. The wine is elegant, but has only few edges at this stage, which some may miss. Nevertheless, I liked it very much: Sometimes a red wine is a lot of fun even if it is not the most complex. It’ll be interesting to see whether more cellaring can bring out some tertiary notes into the mix. DM91.
DE: Eine Cuvée aus etwa drei Vierteln Cabernet Sauvignon und einem Viertel Merlot. Aus einem eher unbeachteten Bordeaux-Jahrgang 2013 mit etwas leichteren Weinen, von denen nicht alle ein langes Leben haben werden.
Die Farbe dieses Weins ist jugendlich. Ein undurchsichtiges, tiefes Dunkelrot mit violetten Reflexen. Im Glas zieht er dicke Schlieren.
Ein elegantes Bouquet mit einer sehr leichten blumigen Note und einer deutlichen, aber weichen Kirschfrucht. Erinnert an Kirschjoghurt. Das gefällt mir! Ein Vanillegewürz ist vorhanden, aber auch subtil. Mit einem Hauch von Minze im Hintergrund. Nach dem Öffnen war zunächst Rauch zu spüren, der sich aber schnell verflüchtigte und die Frucht in den Vordergrund treten ließ.
Die Tannine sind samtig. Das Mundgefühl ist sehr weich und zugänglich. Der Säuregehalt ist zurückhaltend. Am Gaumen überwiegen wieder die dunklen Früchte. Mit mehr Zeit im Glas ändert sich daran nicht viel.
Obwohl der Wein eher weich erscheint, ist der Abgang lang und trocken.
Insgesamt ist der 2013er ein zugänglicher Château d’Issan. Der Wein ist elegant, hat aber in diesem Stadium nur wenige Ecken und Kanten, die manche vielleicht vermissen. Dennoch hat er mir sehr gut gefallen: Manchmal macht ein Rotwein viel Spaß, auch wenn er nicht der komplexeste ist. Es wird interessant sein, zu sehen, ob eine weitere Lagerung im Keller einige tertiäre Noten in die Mischung bringen kann. DM91.
