2014 Tenuta San Guido Le Difese

Tasting note

2014 Tenuta San Guido Le Difese

Medium ruby colour with purple hues. Relatively youthful in appearance. Mellow and ripe fruit on the nose. Red plum, a little jammy, red currant, cranberry. There are also touches of dried herbs and walnuts, as well as earthy notes of autumn leaves. The aromas don't jump out of the glass, though. In the mouth, soft tannins and moderate alcohol. The acidity is well-integrated. This is soft and easy-drinking. A little darker on the palate with cassis, black cherry, and plum. Slightly herbaceous as well, I'm thinking of tomato stems. Solid finish. Drinking really well still. I'd drink this up soon nevertheless, because there isn't enough structure to suggest it'll improve with further ageing. In a good spot now.

Drink through 2025.

Wine details

Vintage:
2014

Damp spring, followed by a cool and wet summer with plenty of rain. Things didn't look so good until September arrived with warm temperatures and sufficient sunshine that lasted long enough to benefit the later-ripening grape varieties. This saved the vintage overall, and helped Sangiovese and some French varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, in particular. Harvests of the earlier ripening Merlot, on the other hand, were sadly not too successful, as was the case for many of the whites. If I'd have to summarise the vintage, I'd say it produced reds that are relatively slim and elegant at best.
