2019 Marchesi Antinori Villa Antinori Rosso

Tasting note

2019 Marchesi Antinori Villa Antinori Rosso

Deep purple-red colour, thick streaks in the glass. Warm and fruity on the nose with medium-intensity cooked fruit. Red plum, cherry and a basket of wild berries. Blackberries and redcurrants. Green peppers. Also some mint. A hint of smokiness with sweet spice from the wood ageing hovers above. The wine is immediately accessible, but offers a remarkable complexity in its price range with this multiplicity of aromas. With a medium, balanced body on the palate. Already slightly developed, the tannins are lush but soft - but this also reflects the balanced style of this wine made from five grape varieties. The flavour is fruity: red cherries and plums, slightly cooked, but framed by sufficient acidity. Perhaps a little short on the finish. When I read these lines, my impression largely matches my note from a year and a half ago. A very good wine, easily accessible and yet with enough substance to be enjoyed even by an experienced wine drinker. Skilfully made.

Drink through 2026.

Wine details

Vintage:
2019

Cold and dry winter. There was plenty of rain during spring, which helped replenish the water tables, but the cool temperatures delayed flowering by about two weeks compared to the long-term average. As is well-documented by now, the summer of 2019 was hot in Tuscany like in other parts of Europe, but there were enough showers to reduce the effect of drought, particularly towards the end of July. Although some producers in the hotter regions saw their yields reduced by heat stress, the wines produced in the Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino appellations are generally considered to be of very high quality.
