2011 Krug Vintage Brut

Description

One of the few prestige vintage cuvées from a challenging, even contradictory, year in Champagne. Fresher and more citrus-driven in style than most Krug wines, though not as "edgy" as the 2008 vintage. Assemblage of Pinot Noir (46 %), Chardonnay (37 %), and Meunier (17 %).

About Krug

Krug, established in 1843, built its reputation under successive family generations, each maintaining stringent quality standards and expanding its vineyard holdings. Despite LVMH's acquisition in 1999, management remains with the Krug family, now in its sixth generation with Olivier Krug.

Krug is celebrated for rejecting up to 70% of purchased grapes, using the finest fruit, such as from Clos du Mesnil in Mesnil-sur-Oger. Only juice from the first pressing is used, with fermentation in small oak barrels, enhancing character. Blending, or assemblage, and extended ageing on lees are signatures, lending Krug wines depth and longevity.

The house's emblematic Grande Cuvée blends 50–60 wines from multiple years and 25 vineyards. Vintage Champagnes undergo 7–15 years' lees ageing, and the rosé blends all three major grape varieties. The rare Clos du Mesnil is a single-vineyard Chardonnay, matured over a decade and revered for purity.
