Pale gold-yellow. Enchanting bouquet; yellow-fruited and citric, with some bruised apple, accompanied by beautifully integrated reductive and mineral notes, wet stone, and subtle flint. Slightly buttery in the background, yet light-footed overall, with faint hints of white blossoms hovering above. Extremely pleasing at this stage. Dry on the palate, lean and light-bodied, yet with considerable depth of flavour; prominent citrus fruit once again, with a chalky character, a touch of nuttiness, and an appealing, smooth texture. Good, surprisingly long finish featuring lemon zest, green apple, and a final hint of honey. If Aligoté is consistently this good, what is the need for Chardonnay?

Aligoté White grape variety found predominantly in Burgundy, France, although Aligoté is also grown in other parts of the world, particularly in Eastern Europe. While the global vineyard area planted with Aligoté has been declining, the variety has been growing in popularity lately as a new generation of vignerons in Burgundy is taking the variety more seriously. Typically dry, crisp and fresh in style, and made to be drunk young. Good Aligotés can show considerable length, too. Moreover, with its naturally high acidity, which it contains even until later ripening stages, it is a welcome alternative during times of global warming. |
