2013 Collovray et Terrier Verger des Feuillants

Tasting note

2013 Collovray et Terrier Verger des Feuillants Mâcon Rouge

Shining, transparent ruby red that is turning discreetly crimson towards the rim. Fragrant nose of medium intensity. Strawberry, raspberry, and wild berries with hints of spices. I also find secondary and tertiary aromas in the form of smoke and earthy notes, respectively. The bouquet is inviting overall, though not overwhelmingly so. In the mouth, typical for Gamay, this is a light-bodied wine with soft tannins and a direct and straightforward acidity. Again fruity flavours, particularly red cherry and raspberry. Cherry yoghurt, perhaps. The finish is on the shorter side of medium and is carried by the fresh cherry flavour. Uncomplicated and still going at just over ten years of age. It just shows that, if well-stored, even lighter wines can age well.

There's a lot going on in terms of aromatics in this Mâcon Rouge, however, and I find myself wondering whether everything is playing hand-in-hand as it should. While neither the tanning structure nor the acidity stand out badly, the different aromas and flavours are not perfectly in harmony. The flavour in particular is missing depth. Perhaps a result of the difficult vintage.

Drink through 2026.
