Hattenheim-Eltville Steinberg Steinberg is one of Germany’s most renowned vineyards and was the Cistercians' favourite at Kloster Eberbach. First recorded in 1211, it is enclosed by a 3.8 km stone wall, mainly built in 1766, which protects the 37-hectare, south-facing site from cold air and creates a unique microclimate. Soils range from sandy to clay loam with stony slate above, retaining water well. Riesling makes up 95% of plantings. The site has two sub-areas; the best dry Rieslings grow in the mid-slope "Zehnstück." Vines along the wall benefit from extra warmth, and wines from this area are labelled "Steinberger Mauerwein." |
