1995 Château Citran

Description

One of the final vintages produced under the ownership of Société Touko Haus (Fujimoto), who had purchased the estate from the Miailhe family in 1987 and would go on to sell it to the Merlaut family in 1996. Likely a mix of roughly 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Typically aged for 12-15 months in French oak barrels, 30-40% new oak. Jacques Boissenot (father of Eric) was consultant.

The 1995 vintage in Bordeaux

Characterised by a hot, dry cycle, 1995 yielded high volumes with elevated polyphenol indices yet low total acidity due to significant malic degradation. Whilst Left Bank Cabernet achieved phenolic maturity, the wines remain defined by structural rigidity. The ageing trajectory has proved problematic; barring superior Médoc estates which now display resolved tertiary profiles, the tannic skeleton has frequently outlived the fruit substance, resulting in marked austerity.
