2014 Château Batailley

Tasting note

2014 Château Batailley

From a half bottle. Deep purple, clear towards the rim, but no signs of age. Wonderful bouquet right from the start. Black fruits: Black cherry, black plum. Very fragrant, I want to keep on smelling! Then there's pencil shavings, forest floor, and a fresh herbal eucalyptus note. On the palate, elegant and juicy black fruits. Black cherry again, bramble, blackcurrant. Just a little earthy, but aside from that, no tertiary notes in the flavour. Good intensity with soft but drying tannins. Long finish. Excellent wine from a perhaps underrated vintage. Still youthful, drinking really nicely now, but with plenty of ageing potential left.

Drink from 2024 through 2032.

Wine details

Vintage:
2014

Good wines were made all over Bordeaux, albeit with some variation across the appellations. Successful vintage especially for Cabernet Sauvignon on the left bank, notably in Saint-Estèphe and Pauillac. If anything, the wines may have matured better than initially expected. They're classic, structured Bordeaux reds that have been attractive from the start but are only now beginning to shine. Good year for both dry and sweet white wines, too. Possibly the best vintage since 2010, but sometimes overlooked because of the excellent 2015 vintage that followed. Accordingly, prices have remained relatively affordable.
