Deep, dark violet with thick, coloured streaks in the glass. The aromas are intense yet refined: dark cherries, blackberries, prune. Floral and spicy too, with violets and liquorice, and a hint of smoke on top. This is not a "warm" wine, but one with deep structure and a cool core. Impressive. Highly extracted, high in tannins, yet these are ripe and soft, showing elegance again. Flavours of black cherries, plum, blackcurrant—leaning slightly towards dried fruits—with dark chocolate as well, carried into the long finish. A touch of blackcurrant leaf. A very good wine, especially in its price range. Lost some contour after the first day; would have deserved more points otherwise.
